Everyone knows how important hashtags are on Twitter. However, I think we have all seen many people (and companies) not understand the proper use of them. There’s so many “don’ts”
when it comes to hashtags, but what exactly are the “do’s”? While it’s great to use broad hashtags such as “Auto Insurance” in our case, but if you want to start a more unique hashtag,
here are some tips:
- Choose something unique. Do a search on Twitter to make sure no one else is using the same hashtag. Whether it’s for a contest, chat, or new product, choose something unique that won’t be used by competitors. Make sure it is specific to the message you are trying to get across, but also short enough.
- Choose something easy to remember. Make it unique, but if you get too detailed or complicated no one
will remember it! There’s a lot of hashtags out there, don’t create something hard to pronounce or spell, make it clear. Something like an acronym can be perfect because it doesn’t take up too much space, but people can easily make the connection.
- Use it on several social media venues. People can’t use your hashtag if they haven’t heard about it or don’t know what it means. Make sure, especially if it is a contest, that your hashtag can also be found (and is explained) on venues like Facebook, Google+, and Pinterest. It may take seeing a hashtag a couple times to remember it so give your audience enough exposure to the hashtag.
- Make sure your hashtag isn’t already being used. Search for your hashtag on Twitter to make sure it doesn’t
have a different meaning for a different company or worse, that it’s already being used by a competitor! Also, see what people are talking about in relation to the hashtag already to make sure you’re involved in a conversation you want to be a part of. What are your hashtag do’s and don’ts?

You ever wonder why February is the one “off” month in the bunch? It is a commonly asked question usually answered with a shrug and then instantly forgetting about the subject. Fortunately, due to some detective work, we have uncovered a few theories as to why February is the odd one in the dozen.
Augustus Jealousy – Rumor has it that Julius Caesar was honored with the month of July with 31 days. Augustus Caesar was honored with August which only had 30 days in the month. To fix this, Augustus stole a day from February to make the months equal. Even emperors aren’t immune to some old fashion envy.
10th Month Calendar – Another theory states that the Roman Calendar only had 10 months, March – December. Numa Pompilius added two extra months to shorten them and avoid any unlucky numbers (even numbers) he made the calendar with seven 31 day months, four 29 day months, and February had to bear the brunt by being 28 days. The reason February got the rough end of the calendar stick was that it was the last month of the year and very cold.
Whether or not you want to believe these theories, it is still interesting to think about how decisions thousands of years ago still affect us today. Regardless of whatever you choose to believe, we can all agree that history can be quite quirky at times. Make sure that February is a safe month for you no matter how short it is. Feeling under the weather? Well, that may be as bad as being under the influence if you’re behind the wheel. That’s right; a study recently found that driving with a cold is similar to drunk driving. Drivers with a heavy cold, especially those that are feeling groggy can experience slower your reaction times. It may also cause you to have trouble stopping and even drive too close to the vehicle in front of you, all things you would also experience while driving under the influence. Also, when you sneeze you are being forced to look away from the road for up to three seconds. Given all of these factors, you may want to think twice about driving next time you get a heavy cold.
It seems that we can now add drivers that have colds to the lists of distracted drivers on the road. As the list grows longer, it becomes even clearer that unfortunately we cannot control what sort of distractions others have while driving. The one thing we can control is our protection against those drivers on the road. Whether it’s because you’re in between homes or a family member has an in-law or two family, moving in with family is becoming more and more common in Connecticut. What many people don’t think about when making this decision is Renters Insurance. Even if it’s a temporary stay, it’s important to make sure you and your things are covered. You may think that if your belongings were stolen or damaged in something like a fire you would have the coverage you need. However, this isn’t always the case.
Your family’s homeowner’s policy will most likely cover your belongings as long as you are resident relatives. However, if damage occurs to just your things, your family may be apprehensive to put a claim in. Too many claims on a homeowners insurance policy can result in higher premiums so if they were to start to file claims for your belongings, they may suffer. If you live with your family and something happens to your things, they may not want to put in a claim under their own policy-it may not be in their best interest.
Having your own CT renters insurance can also help if the person you’re staying with carries a high deductible. If their deductible is $1,000 and your $800 laptop is stolen, they most likely won’t have the coverage to put the claim in. However the average Renters Insurance policy has a deductible of $250. Before moving in give our agents a call at 888.865.1244 and get the coverage you need with a Renters Insurance policy designed just for you!

You may have seen on the news that both the Burger King and Jeep Twitter handles had been hacked last week. Given the importance of companies’ social media venues to their overall reputation these days, something like that can really harm a company. On Monday of last week a hacker got into the Burger King Twitter and reported they had been taken over by McDonald’s. On Tuesday, Jeep had hackers take over and say Cadillac had taken over their brand. Considering the background photo for Jeep was a Cadillac painted with McDonald’s logos, one would think the two hackings may have been connected.
These Twitter hacking cases brought up a good opportunity to talk about some basics for Protecting Your Social Media Accounts. Let’s review some basic tips to keep in mind daily when running your online accounts.
Use strong passwords. This is an obvious one and something we have been hearing for some time now. Combine letters, numbers, and symbols if you can. It’s also a good idea to change your passwords every once in a while, and of course if someone leaves the company that knew the passwords.
Make sure your computer is protected. Having the right virus software can also help avoid being
hacked. Update your security software and scan your computer regularly as well. Also try to keep an eye on running processes. If you take a look at your Windows Task Manager window and notice some processes running that don’t look familiar this can be a BIG red flag.
These are just a couple of ways you can help protect against hackers. I should also mention as consumers to keep our eyes out for companies staging hacking for publicity. That’s a trend I suggest you steer away from!
