Pool Safety

Swimming in the pool may be a favorite summertime activity, but it can also be dangerous. According to the CDC, there are about 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings per year. Many of those are under the age of 14. To ensure everyone’s well being, consider taking these safety precautions:

  • Make sure there is a fence around your pool. This fence should lock to prevent children from accidentally getting too close to the pool
  • Always supervise children when they are in, or near, the pool.
  • Ensure that your pool has compliant drain covers.
  • Take a CPR course so that you, and others in your household, are prepared in the event of an emergency.

Play Structure Safety

Having a playset or playground at your home is a great way to entertain kids in the summer. Sometimes, injuries can still happen, but check out these tips to help mitigate some of the risks:

  • Install a shock-absorbing surface around the play area. This could include woodchips, shredded rubber, surface mats, or other rubber materials. Each material has different absorption standards, so be sure to follow the guidelines.
  • Check for protruding hooks, nails, bolts, etc. where children could get cut or stuck.
  • Look for places where children could get stuck.
  • Always have an adult watch children when they are playing on the playground.
  • Make sure there are guard rails or handles in places with potential falling hazards.

General Yard Safety

In general, make sure that your backyard is safe for your family to use. Do your best to prep your yard for all the fun that’s to come this season. These simple steps can help keep everyone safe this summer:

  • Remove debris from the yard. Fallen branches, rocks, and other debris may have appeared since the winter months. Clear them off to prevent someone from tripping over them.
  • If you have a patio, check it for structural security. The last thing you want is a patio or porch that’s about to fall over!

  • Keep gardening and landscaping supplies out of reach from children or pets. 
  • Store tools and equipment in secure places where children won’t be playing with them.
  • Install outdoor lights to improve visibility at night.
