Graduation Party Tips!

Graduation season is upon us! The tulips are in bloom, the caps have been thrown, and the diplomas have been rewarded. During these next few months of celebration, you may find yourself planning to throw a graduation party for a loved one. Before champagne is popped and congratulatory gifts are exchanged, these are some tips to help you prepare!

Prepping your house

Make sure your guests are safe by prepping your home before they arrive. This could include more long-term installations to make your home safe, or it could just be making sure that you don’t have anything on the ground where someone could trip.

  1. Make sure there aren’t any slippery surfaces where guests could slip and fall. This may include rugs or spills on the floor.
  2. Install handrails by any steps, if they are not already there. This will reduce the likelihood of someone accidentally falling down the stairs.
  3. Take precautionary measures and purchase a home fire extinguisher, especially if you are planning to have a backyard BBQ.
  4. Make sure you have a first aid kit at home. It’s useful incase of any cuts, scrapes, or other minor injuries.
  5. If you have a pool, make sure that you tell your insurance provider about it. By letting your insurer know about your backyard pool, you will have coverage in the event of an accident. You should also put a fence around the perimeter of the pool. By doing so, you could prevent someone from mistakenly falling in.   If you do have a pool, and plan on having guests use it during your graduation party, be sure to have an adult supervise at all times.
  6. Inform your insurance company about any pets you may have. Even if you think Fido may be harmless, you could find yourself paying a lot of money out of pocket if your pet ends up hurting a guest.
  7. It’s best to speak to your insurance agent about your homeowners insurance policy because they are the best resource to help make sure you are protected in case of any accidents or damage to your home.

Serving alcohol at your party

If you are planning on serving alcohol at your graduation party there are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Never drink and drive. If one of your guests tries to drive home while intoxicated, it could lead to a number of unfortunate consequences. Alcohol dramatically increases the chances of getting into an accident. If a guest tries to leave under the influence, make sure they have a designated driver to take them home. You may also consider calling them a taxi, or another ride sharing service to safely bring them home.
  2. Be aware of any minors who may be drinking alcohol.   There is a growing movement to hold the adults responsible for minors who consume alcohol. The best way to avoid any incidents involving underage drinking is to not serve any alcohol to minors.
  3. Alcohol impairs judgment, so there is a greater chance of a guest sustaining injuries while under the influence. You should make sure that your house is as safe as it possibly can be prior to the start of your graduation party.
  4. Because serving alcohol increases risk at your party, you will want to make sure that you have adequate homeowners insurance to help cover any potential mishaps or damage. It is always best to call up your agent to discuss your policy, as they will be able to help you pick the right amount of coverage for you.
  5. Another option to discuss with your agent is umbrella insurance. Umbrella insurance could help cover you in case of some unexpected incidents. Again, it is something you should talk to your insurance agent about, since they can help choose the right plan for you and your needs.

At the end of the day, you want your guests to have a good time celebrating this momentous occasion, while still staying safe. The best way to do that is to make your home as safe as possible, and getting enough insurance coverage just in case something does happen.
