I’m Doing Some Home Improvements…Now What?
Sometimes a New Years’ resolution isn’t just for you, it may be something set out to improve your home. It makes sense. Your body is your temple, but your home also is your temple so why not fix up or add to the place you spend most of your time. The obvious thing to keep in mind whenever you are considering home improvements or additions is your CT home insurance.
Looking to make your home bigger? Whether you love your current home too much to leave or you think it’s a better idea for your budget to add an addition, it can be a great idea. Keep in mind that any time you put an addition on your home you are increasing the square footage of your home. This means you will need to let your insurance company know about the change. More square footage means that the cost would increase to repair or rebuild your home. A new replacement cost estimator will be required for your Connecticut home insurance policy.
If you are thinking of making your home more green this year with solar panels on your roof, be sure to give us a call and let us know about this change as well. It’s a great way to help the environment and potentially lower your electricity bills. However, if you choose to install solar panels to help offset this cost, or are just trying to go green, make sure the dwelling coverage on your home is increased accordingly.
Other additions you may make to your home is adding on a deck or porch. It’s hard to imagine in the current weather, but come summer time it is a great place to soak up some sun and enjoy the weather. Adding this would once again increase the replacement cost of your home so once again, make sure you give us a call and update your policy. Lastly, maybe you are considering building a gazebo, shed or other structure on your property. If you do you will need to make sure you have a high enough limit for “Other Structures” (all structures detached from your home) coverage on your home insurance. If you don’t this may require additional coverage.
It’s important that any additions or changes that are made to your home are covered on your home insurance policy. In the event that there is a fire in your home or something of that nature the last thing you need is the new additions or changes to not be covered.
