In the professional world, LinkedIn has become one of the hottest networks for connecting classmates and colleagues. For those who are not familiar with the site, LinkedIn acts a virtual resume where you list your professional achievement as well as connect with friends. If you have an account and feel frustrated or if you do not and are unsure of where to start, do not worry. Some suggestions on improving your LinkedIn will allow you to stay connect and still maintain that professional image.
Create a LinkedIn Group – While you might be part of many groups, how many have you started? If the answer is no then you might consider creating one of your own. Any fellow connections will be impressed with your leadership and hopefully join. This group can focus on multiple aspects, such as career goals or even personal tips about the professional world.
Model Yourself After Someone You Admire – There are many people we see with job experience that makes us salivate. If you look up to that individual, then try to mimic them. Notice their formatting or admirable traits and attempt to acquire them yourself. Even use them as a resource since they obviously know how to achieve goals.
Update Your Profile – Make it a goal to spend a few hours on your profile every month. Things are constantly changing and you need to reflect those changes in your profile. Even if they happen to be small, such as added responsibilities at work, add them to your current occupation. While it might seem easier to do this all at once, if you keep putting it off, it will never get done!
Also make sure you have a nice smiling snapshot uploaded as well as a record of all past work experience.
Make New Connections – When it comes to building connections on LinkedIn, aim for quality over quantity. Definitely extend beyond your office, but do not overdo it and have 500 connections. A double digit number or triple digit number above 50 will ensure your best chance of reaching out to
other connections. Also, do not be afraid to reconnect with past faces – that is one of the major reasons for social media. Small quick holiday wishes will be enough to show that you notice.

It’s important to remember if you’re a business owner, there’s also a whole world out there for your business on LinkedIn. In addition to business pages, similar to a Facebook page, you can also create a LinkedIn Group. This group can be for your specific business or can focus more broadly on your industry. If you think your expertise may help others in your industry, why not share those and potentially engage and learn from others?
Having a group on LinkedIn can help build more awareness with your target market and really position you as an expert in your field. It can also help to build up relationships you already have
with people in your industry or form new ones. As you’re setting yourself up as a leader in your industry you are also generating buzz around your company (and your name). This could be an opportunity to turn members of your group into clients or at the very least frequent visitors/subscribers to your website and social media content.

This may sound harsh to put rules and guidelines on members of your group, but it can really help you be a better group leader and can help keep your members and discussions on track. Lay it out for group members exactly what is and isn’t acceptable.
- Screen new members and new discussions. This is the best way to avoid people joining your group and then trying to recruit people for their business or bringing spam in. It can also help keep your group on track with your goals. Make sure discussions are relevant and group members have the right intentions.
- Make use of group announcements. These can help you you keep people interested in your group content and can also make for great call to actions. However, it’s important to not overdue it. One email a week may be okay to members, but one every day may have them losing interest and leaving your group.
- Be a leader! If you have a larger business and feel as though you are already wearing enough hats, make sure you have someone that can lead for you. Somone should be the face of the group and invest a good amount of time leading discussions and being the most active
member. It’s a good idea to post weekly discussions or questions and comment to encourage engagement. Your members will get weekly emails highlighting the group activity. Exciting and engaging activity will pull those people in!
